In 1997 the game Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight (just Jedi Knight, for short) was released by Lucasarts. It allowed Star Wars fans to take control of a character in multiplayer battles for the first time, and weild their favorite weapon, the lightsaber. It was a revolutionary game for its time, and a large online community built up around it. "Clans" (guilds) from all over the world sprung up. The Order of the Sith was one of the first of these clans, having been formed before the games release.
These early clans centered themselves around a gaming league known as The Black Sun Empire (BSE). The OotS was the 29th clan registered with the BSE. This league helped organize the community and put on gaming events and tournaments specifically for Star Wars related games. Eventually the Jedi Knight community grew too large for even the BSE, and flourished on its own.
The Internet Gaming Zone (Now known as MSN Games) supported Jedi Knight and clans took their battles to that website. It was during this time that the Order of the Sith flourished, attracting members from around the globe. We went undefeated in clan battles throughout our history of playing Dark Forces II.
In the meantime the Black Sun Empire gaming league had disbanded. With the permission of its original creator, OotS member Freedon remade the BSE from the ground up and resumed running online tournaments for clans through the Internet Gaming Zone and via IRC chat.
As time went on the clan kept playing Jedi Knight together and ventured somewhat into other games, such as X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. Eventually a sequel to Dark Forces II was released, Jedi Outcast. The Order of the Sith stayed around during this time, but alas the multiplayer aspect of this game was not as well balanced as it was with Jedi Knight, and the online Star Wars community began to degrade. Eventually the Order of the Sith went dormant around the year 2001.
Now, ten years later with the coming release of Star Wars: The Old Republic, Star Wars and gaming fans once again have a chance to build a solid online community. The Order of the Sith plans to once again flourish during this time and write a new chapter in our long history.
